There are many factors that we have to consider, but after a long and thoughtful process, we've managed to compile a list of the top NFL defenses of all time. Let's check them out.
1. Chicago Bears
The Bears have proven themselves to be one of the best defenses in the NFL today. But that can be said for their past teams too, especially the 1985 defense that helped win their only Super Bowl Championship. Currently, they are placed second in the NFC North Division. Their current head coach is Matt Nagy, and judging by the results, he is excelling at his job. An interesting fact about the Bears is that they are one of only two remaining teams from the NFL's founding way back when in early 1920. Another thing you might find interesting is that they have a long-standing rivalry on the field with another NFL team – the Green Bay Packers.
2. Baltimore Ravens
The Ravens are a relatively new addition to the NFL. They joined in 1996 and have only gotten better. Historically they have nine Championship titles, most recently in 2018 with another AFC title. John Harbaugh has been their head coach since 2008, and both the team's defense and offense have significantly improved. With the help of Don Martindale (defense coordinator), the team's defense will only grow in the future.
3. Jacksonville Jaguars
Even if a team isn't living up to the high hopes you've had for them, the defense isn't always to blame. This is the case with the Jacksonville Jaguars. The franchise has been with the NFL since 1995. Head coach Doug Marrone has had experiences with other NFL franchises like the Buffalo Bills and has been with the Jaguars for a few years now. They have won three Division Championships, and although they are not a “top” team, their defense is one of the best out there.
4. Cleveland Browns
The Browns are a franchise with eight League Championships under their belt. Also, they have over thirty Division and Conference Championships. Although they can pride themselves with so many titles, they were all earned in the last century. We have yet to see a championship in this century, but we hope their head coach Freddie Kitchens gives them some of the “mojo” of the previous teams he coached (Dallas Cowboys, Arizona Cardinals &, etc.) They have had twenty-four players officially inducted in the Football Hall of Fame since their establishment in early 1945.
5. Seattle Seahawks
The Seahawks were established more than forty years ago. They have had many great head coaches, and currently, Pete Carroll is hired to lead the team into victory. Previously he coached clubs such as the New York Jets and the New England Patriots. In 2013 they won their only Super Bowl title. They have a .500 winning percentage, and in the 2010 season, they were the only team to qualify for the playoffs with a losing record of 7-9. Players such as Cortez Kennedy and Kenny Easley, legendary defense players were inducted in the Pro Football Hall of Fame exclusively because of their accomplishments while they were with the Seattle Seahawks.
6. Houston Texans
The Houston Texans are a relatively new team. They joined as an expansion team in 2002, but their luck flourished in 2011. After that, they got their ducks in a row and won their first Division Championship. After that, they earned four more Division titles. Their defense is in good hands with their defensive end J. J. Watt. An interesting fact about the team is that as of the end of the 2018 season, there is one team the Texans have never lost against. Unbelievably it's to the Chicago Bears. Bill O'Brien is their current coach and the only one with a positive win/loss stat of all the coaches that have led the Texans over the years.
7. Buffalo Bills
The Buffalo Bills are another team on our list with an impressive history. They were established in 1959 and joined the NFL during the 1970 merger. Their best players were the ones during the early 1990s. During that period, they won eight Division and Conference Championships. With head coach Sean McDermott and defensive coaches Leslie Frazier and Bob Babich, the team has good mentors from which the young talent can learn. Like all teams, they have had their ups and downs, but we expect them to be a great defensive force next season.
8. Arizona Cardinals
The defensive talent of the Cardinals has always been present. Even now, players like Patrick Peterson, Budda Baker, and Chandler Jones headline the defense, and they have the talent. But somehow, the team defense has trouble overcoming other teams' substantial offensive challenges they face. They are a founding franchise of the NFL along with the Chicago Bears. They have earned a total of ten Championships (Division, Conference, and League).
9. Dallas Cowboys
The Cowboys' coaching staff has done a great job when it comes to team defense. These days young stars like Ezekiel Elliott and Demarcus Lawrence excel in performing and have made the Dallas Cowboys defense find its way to this list. Their defense is only going to improve with the young talent. They haven’t allowed more than 24 points in any contest. An interesting fact about the franchise is that they hold an NFL record since 2002. They have more than 190 consecutive sell-outs at both home and away games. They have won five Super Bowls and more than thirty Conference and Division titles.
10. Washington Redskins
The Redskins have compiled over a thousand games played since their founding in 1932. They also have an impressive title collection starting with five League Championships and adding nineteen more Division and Conference titles. Over the years, they have had many legendary head coaches such as Joe Gibbs who coached the team twice in his career, Vince Lombardi and George Allen. Since 2014 Jay Gruden has been hired as head coach, and he is doing a great job.
