Discover the Hidden Gem- Spitting Cave Honolulu
Hawaii in general is known for its beauty and splendor. As a popular attraction for tourists around the world, there are plenty of beautiful scenes to take in. But like many tourist destinations, the crowds can be a bit of a problem at times. So, if you are looking for a place that is less known but just as unique and amazing while you are visiting, consider the Spitting Caves near Honolulu Hawaii.
Spitting Cave of Oahu, also commonly known as China Walls, makes for a perfect getaway for an afternoon of sightseeing. It is a picturesque lookout spot with stunning lava rock flows, amazing views, bright turquoise waters, and a closeness to nature you are not expecting for the location. Spitting Caves is located in the Portlock neighborhood of Hawaii Kai.
Unlike many other destinations on the islands, there is no clear marking for where the caves are or who to get there. It is off the beaten path and difficult to find if you do not know what to look for, simply because it is in the middle of a residential area among million-dollar mansions and homes. However, when you do find it you will discover a stunning spot you cannot help but fall in love with.
Hiking Out to Spitting Cave Oahu
Once you arrive in the general area it is not too far to get to the caves themselves from the lookout point. It’s a 0.2-mile hike down from the residential street and most people can make the hike in five to ten minutes. It is a bit of a steep go with some slippery and rough terrain patches along the way that can make it feel like quite the trek.
Once you arrive, however, any additional hiking or climbing will be to explore the caves or make your way down to the rocky shore during low tides. Most people should be able to make the climb. Spitting Cave Honolulu is popular with dog lovers and most have no trouble making the hike either so it is a somewhat challenging but fairly accessible destination.
What to Do at Spitting Cave Honolulu
Like many of the beautiful islands of Hawaii, there are plenty of fun and unique things you can do here. Once you reach your destination you can enjoy an afternoon at the Spitting Caves by trying some of the following:
The Caves Spit On You
The caves get their name from the way the curvy and smooth lava flow rocks make the crashing waves spit up water from the shoreline and the cave itself. While the ocean spray does make the rocks slippery, it is a breathtaking view and it can be fun to get ‘spit on’ by Mother Nature as she puts on a show. Be sure to wear shoes with good grip and traction to avoid slipping on the wet rocks and never go too close to the edge of the rock formation!
Get in Some Whale Watching
Though like Mother Nature herself, there is no set schedule for when they will appear, Spitting Caves is a great lookout spot for seeing whales and other marine life. You can see for miles out to sea and watching frow ales, dolphins and even ships passing by can make for a fun and unique afternoon activity. The sunsets are also particularly beautiful there though caution is needed as the hike back can be a little tricky in low light conditions.
Adrenaline Junkie Cliff-Jumping
Some say Spitting Cave is a cliff jumping spot and while this might be true for reckless adrenaline junkies, it is not the best way to enjoy the spot. Jumping from high up, as the cliffs can be as high as 70 feet or more, is dangerous and is not advised. During high tide, people have drowned from being sucked into the cave by strong currents. During low tide, people misjudge the depth and diet from hitting the rocks below. Cliff diving is not at all advised!
Sunbathing and Hiking
Once you have made the climb up to Spitting Caves you can take a few hours and relax and enjoy yourself. Sunbathers love the warm rocks and the beautiful scenery that just invites you to sit and relax for a while. If you are up for some more exploration you can walk along the top of the lookout cliffs or work your way down to the lower areas during low tide. Just watch your timing and don’t get trapped down there when the water starts to come in!
How to Get to Spitting Cave
Getting to Spitting Cave is usually best done by car as public transport doesn’t have a stop near the access trail. Getting there via bus is possible if you are up for a 30–45-minute walk before you hit the trail. You can get off at the Hanauma Bay bus stop and walk to Lumahai Street which is where the access trail is located.
Getting to Spitting Cave by car is much easier. You can find the caves’ access trail in the neighborhood area of 7 Lumahai Street in Portlock. Park on the street, being sure to follow all laws and regulations about where you can and cannot park. It is a residential area so be polite and don’t block driveways. Find a 119A access sign marker, which notes a small path leading down a steep embankment. If it has been raining recently this path is slippery and muddy and is often the most challenging part of the hike for most people.
Following the trail leads to the cliffs and gives you amazing views of the Spitting Caves. So be sure to check it out for yourself and add the Spitting Cave Oahu to your bucket list today!
